What colleagues and editors say
“In 25 years in journalism, I've worked with many great editors, but Judy is at the top of the list. She combines attention to detail, appreciation for the language, and general human decency and compassion that in my experience is a combination very hard to find.”
Tim Madigan, senior writer, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
“Judy was, hands down, the best editor I've ever had the pleasure to work for - respectful and firm, fun to work with, an amazing line editor who always made my work better, and a brilliant writer who made me a better writer through working with her. Also, her sunny personality would be a welcome addition to any newsroom or company.”
Karen Brooks, executive producer/web and interactive, KXAN, Austin
“Judy is an outstanding writer, who adapts and works extremely well with her various counterparts. She looks for creative and innovative ways to relay her ideas and stories..”
Brian Murnahan, Media Relations Specialist, DFW International Airport
“Judy is smart, adaptable and a fast study...She's also a gifted writer, with a talent for drawing in readers with storytelling while also imparting the facts.”
Patricia Rodriguez, former Features Editor, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
“When I worked for Judy, I was impressed with her ability to handle several things at once -- not only did she push me (or occasionally rein me in when she needed to), but she kept her focus and humor even while editing one of the biggest projects in Star-Telegram history and still continued to produce a standout Travel section, which was even better when she wrote the lead story.
Robert Philpot, Entertainment reporter, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Comments: “This strong piece of health journalism about a rare genetic
disorder—Fragile X Syndrome—wasn't an easy subject to navigate. But the
author, with skillful writing and an ability to make scientific information
accessible to readers, ended up delivering a sensitive and informative
portrayal of this little known disability.

Judges’ comments: The “Weekly Guide for Road Warriors and Day-Trippers” is an excellent example of service journalism, with ideas and tips for travel near and far. The Texas focus of the section suggests the editors really know their readers. But these aren’t formulaic stories about the same old places. Rather, the section is “newsier” than many others, with interesting angles on familiar destinations.
